Vine gave creators exactly six seconds to be funny, and somehow that absurd constraint produced the most influential comedy format the internet has ever seen. Years after the platform went dark, we're still quoting it, still remixing it, and still wondering why nothing has quite filled the hole it left.
In 2010, a Swedish developer released a game that looked like it was built from LEGOs designed by someone who had never seen a LEGO. By 2012, it was the most talked-about game on the internet, and millions of people were watching strangers build castles on YouTube at midnight. Here's why that made complete sense.
The hashtag started as a nerdy Twitter organizational trick and somehow ended up reshaping social movements, brand marketing disasters, and the entire concept of what a pound sign is for. It also gave us #YOLO, for which we must hold ourselves collectively accountable.
Somewhere between 2009 and 2013, an entire generation collectively decided that the most flattering thing a human face could do was impersonate a mallard. The duckface selfie wasn't just a pose — it was a cultural institution, a meme factory, and a window into exactly how seriously we were all taking ourselves. Spoiler: very, very seriously.
Long after FarmVille planted its first digital seed, an entire ecosystem of copycat games colonized your Facebook feed and somehow convinced you to log in at 2 a.m. to harvest virtual strawberries. From Mafia Wars to Restaurant City, these gloriously dumb time-wasters rewired our brains before mobile gaming even knew what it wanted to be. Grab a fake watering can and let's talk about it.
Before battle royales and loot boxes, there was FarmVille — a deceptively wholesome Facebook game that somehow convinced millions of non-gamers to wake up at 2 a.m. to harvest virtual strawberries. It was the most powerful gateway drug the gaming world ever accidentally produced, and your mom was absolutely hooked.
Somewhere around 2011, millions of otherwise sensible people decided that lying completely rigid and face-down in random public locations—and photographing it—was the pinnacle of human creative expression. Planking was dumb, dangerous, and utterly irresistible, and it tells us something uncomfortably honest about the internet's early hunger for attention. Welcome back to the time when going horizontal was the hottest thing you could do.
Before gaming got polished, profanity-filtered, and brand-safe, Call of Duty multiplayer lobbies were a living, breathing social experiment with absolutely zero guardrails. From 'I'll 1v1 you on Rust' to the kid who claimed his uncle worked at Infinity Ward, this was the internet at its loudest, dumbest, and somehow most memorable. Strap in — we're going back to the lobby.
Somewhere between 2009 and 2014, millions of Americans looked up from their phones and realized they'd been flinging cartoon birds at pigs for forty-five minutes on a Tuesday morning. Nobody planned for this. Nobody warned us. And honestly? We'd do it all again.
Between 2010 and 2012, an entire generation of teenagers decided that the best use of social media was photographing themselves lying rigidly on top of increasingly dangerous objects, then immediately pivoting to crouching like birds on those same objects. It was absurd, it was contagious, and it was somehow the direct ancestor of every TikTok trend that followed. We need to talk about planking.
Before TikTok dances and Instagram Reels, people were lying face-down on escalator handrails and crouching on mailboxes like sentient birds — and the entire internet was obsessed with it. Planking, Owling, Horsemaning, and their many bizarre cousins defined an era of physical comedy that required nothing but a camera, zero self-consciousness, and a complete disregard for personal safety. Here's how we got there, and why we kind of miss it.
Before Twitter beef and Instagram clout, there was Club Penguin — a frozen island where millions of kids logged on, waddled around, and accidentally learned everything there is to know about online social dynamics. It was chaotic, wholesome, and somehow more emotionally resonant than half the apps we use today. Disney killed it in 2017, and honestly? We're still not over it.
Long before Instagram made oversharing aspirational, millions of Americans were anonymously posting their most mortifying moments to websites that promised nothing except a community of strangers who would vote on how bad your day actually was. FMyLife, My Life Is Average, and their chaotic cousins were a weird, warm, and deeply human corner of the early internet — and we kind of miss them desperately.
If you plugged a headset into an Xbox 360 controller between roughly 2008 and 2013, you experienced something that modern gaming has entirely sanitized out of existence: the completely unfiltered, emotionally volatile, occasionally transcendent chaos of the online multiplayer lobby. It was loud, it was often terrible, and somehow — in the way that only truly unmoderated spaces can be — it was also kind of magical. Pour one out for a culture that could never survive 2024.
From SuperWhoLock crossover fanfic to shipping wars that genuinely felt like international incidents, Tumblr between 2010 and 2014 was its own sovereign nation with its own customs, its own language, and absolutely zero chill. We went back to document the madness — and honestly, we kind of want to go back.
